As temperatures dip lower and heating bills get higher, animal care experts offer a simple reminder furry friends get cold, too.

The Slice: When they talk, their furry friends listen

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Here are some reasons people talk to theirpets.

“If I have a strong opinion on something, the dog wags her tail,” wrote David Bowman. “My wife just rolls hereyes.”

“I have a wonderful pair of pets – a dog and a cat – whom I love talking to because they’re cuddly and nonjudgmental,” wrote Caroline Cunningham. “Furthermore, neither pretends to like me for my intelligence and both genuinely adore me for my kindness and affection, which is more than I can say of some humans Iknow.”

“My dog is truly man’s best friend,” wrote Jerry Hilton. “I talk to her all the time, especially when we are alone. I often tell her my deep dark secrets. Not once has she betrayed myconfidence.”

Favorite New Years Eve scene in a movie: Darsi Kemp nominated the happy ending to “When Harry MetSally.”

RE: Mondays Slice: Oatmeal eaters seemed to regard as sage commentary my assertion that they can be trusted. Certain others were skeptical about myresearch.

AJ Cain became a fan of the classic cereal after she figured out how to prepare it. (She doesn’t use instant and cooks hers with milk and cinnamon.) “I hated the stuff for years which was attributed to my mother’s idea for my childhood morning breakfast. It was a gooey/gluey lump of amess.”

Private screenings: Diane Aune was among those locally who spent part of Christmas Day connected via Skype with distant family members – in Sacramento, in hercase.

“God bless those geeks who figured out this remarkable way to communicate. … Think we were hooked up for over five hours,” shewrote.

Marjorie Lefevre and one daughter in Ritzville were connected by video link with another daughter and a granddaughter in Nebraska. The four of them fired up their sewing machines and had a competition, just as if they weretogether.

Warm-up question: Ever heard a holiday toast so bad it made you put down yourglass?

Todays Slice question: What do forest managers think of people taking Christmas trees into the woods and setting them free, so tospeak?

Write The Slice at PO Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210, call (509) 459-5470; email pault@spokesman.com. Ronda Castillo would have given Spokane driving lessons forChristmas.

Furry friends seeking homes for the holidays

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Some of the best Christmas gifts you can give yourself come wrapped in fur. Theyre cuddly, they make great companions – and the joy of having them around wont fade with the season but will last a lifetime. Where to find such presents? Head for the San Antonio Humane Society, where some of the cutest cats and dogs you can imagine are hoping for homes. Typical of the furry sweethearts:

Snowball: This felines fur is as soft and white as the flakes that are supposed to fall during the holidays. And although he might not bring that icy stuff to Texas, he still can bring a blizzard of fun into your life. Snowball is just 5 months old – a kitten, really – but hes mellow and well behaved for his age. Favorite things are snuggling, purring and meeting new people. His first set of vaccinations, a microchip for ID, fixing and a bag of Science Diet will be among the perks included in his adoption package.

Elroy: Taken in at the Humane Societys receiving facility at Animal Care Services, the little collie mix instantly won hearts with his adorable puppy ways. He likes to cuddle. He likes to play. He likes to pounce with glee and give sweet kisses. Elroy is adorable, in other words, and he promises to be a great grown-up dog. So just give him some guidance and show patience as he learns the ropes. In almost no time, you will be rewarded with a perfect pal.

Where to find these pets: Snowball, Elroy and many others are in the care of the San Antonio Humane Society, 4804 Fredericksburg Road. Call 210-226-7461. To find out more about the shelter, visit www.sahumane.org.

ASPCA: Furry Friends Seek Friendly Homes All Year Round

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

The ASPCA has a few good pets looking for a new home in the new year.

More than 100 cats and dogs are up for adoption at the ASPCAs center on the Upper East Side.

ASPCA officials are asking New Yorkers to consider adding a new member to their family in 2012.

They also recommend taking part in their meet your match program to ensure a good household fit.

We encourage everyone who is interested in adopting to think about the time commitment that would be involved with owning a new pet, also providing them with proper health care and grooming and exercise. So we do encourage the entire family, everyone whos going to be in contact with the animal, to come in because it is going to be a family commitment, said ASPCA Adoption Program Assistant Director Lourdes Bravo.

The ASPCA hit its goal in 2011 of adopting out 3,200 pets. However, the organization says adoptions are down 10 percent citywide, likely due to the economy.

We want people to consider adopting not only through the end of this year but make that a New Years resolution to bring a furry friend home, said ASPCA Volunteer Program Director Diane Wilkerson.

We are still full to capacity, there are plenty of animals that are still looking for their homes, added Bravo.

For more information on adopting a furry friend, visit aspca.org.

Santee Patch Furry Friends Gallery

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Today is National Dog Day and its put me in the mood to get together a gallery of Santees furry friends.

#13;

I was going to start with a gallery of dogs in honor of their day, but I got a new kitten about a month ago, around the same time I got a new camera, so I have about a million pictures of her, and need to show them off. That, and not everyones a dog person, so wed love to see your birds, cats, rats, even reptiles!

#13;

I once helped breed and hatch a brood of bearded dragons, so I know even the cold blooded critters can be a member of the family!

#13;

So, if youre a Santee Patch reader, share some photos of your furry family members and let us know a bit about them in the caption. Just click the add your photos amp; video link under the photos.

And, if you dont have a pet, a great place to get one is with San Diego Animal Rescue. You can see SD Animal Rescues dogs ready for adoption on weekends between 1 pm to 6 pm at the Santee PetSmart.

Furry friends to aid fundraiser

BUCHANAN — For some they are members of the family. Many make them their career. Others spend a great deal of time and money protecting them from extinction or harm.
Animals. Whether it is Fido curling up on a lap, days spent caring for them on the farm or simply being out in nature watching the fish jump in the lake or a hawk gliding in the breeze, humans have an intrinsic fascination with the animal world.
On Sept. 25, Buchanan will be celebrating humans’ relationships with their furry, feathered, scaled and even slimy friends with a one-day Blessing of the Animals Festival. The idea for the festival came about during a fundraising planning meeting being held at the Buchanan Art Center. Activities will be centered in the Buchanan Commons.
Each fall across the country, pet owners can be seen leading their favorite pets to local churches for a special blessing ceremony. First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan will hold its Blessing of the Animals Sept. 25 from 11 am to 6 pm, and inspired its neighbors at the art center next door to create the festival to further honor pets.
The festival, which will celebrate all creatures great and small, will also serve as a fun way to raise funds for the popular art center.
A number of interesting family-fun activities and displays of interest to animal enthusiasts are planned for the event. The art center itself is offering pet paw prints in clay tiles, a gift booth of animal related items, a raffle for a pastel portrait of a pet and children can have their faces painted as their favorite animals. T-shirts and calendars promoting the center’s lively scarecrow program will also be for sale.
Orchardview Grooming and Boarding of Buchanan will have a Doggie Kissing Booth and will donate all proceeds to the art center. Their New Buffalo location, Wags amp; Whiskers will also have a display.
Second Chance Small Dog Animal Rescue of Elkhart will be holding an adoption event as part of the festival. All dogs from the rescue have had complete health checkups and are vaccinated. Potential owners can apply for adoption after which the group will conduct a home visit. Fees vary according to the animal selected.

The Rainbow Tracks Buchanan Area 4-H Club is planning a booth for petting chickens and rabbits. Whispering Dreams Farm is setting up a goat petting area and will sell goat milk soap.
While there will be no petting of the honey bees, Blossomland Bee Supply will present a video on the “Vanishing of the Bees” in addition to supplying information for those interested in beekeeping classes. Local honey will also be for sale.
Buchanan ‘s Field of Dreams Dog Park supporters will promote park awareness, sponsor a pet costume contest and a Strut your Mutt Walk, among other fundraising activities for the newly planned Buchanan attraction.
New exhibits are being added every day and vendors and crafts people from the surrounding area are invited to participate. Booths for anyone wishing to sell or promote animal related products and passions can be rented for $20. Applications are available by contacting the Buchanan Art Center at 117 West Front St., Buchanan, 697-4005 or buchananart@att.net.
