Equal Opportunity Panel Updates Hiring Policy

May 21st, 2012

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Wednesday approved an updated policy that makes it harder for employers to use background checks to systematically rule out hiring anyone with a criminal conviction.

The commission said that while employers may legally consider criminal records in hiring decisions, a policy that excludes all applicants with a conviction could violate employment discrimination laws because it could have a disparate impact on racial and ethnic minorities....

NBA Gambling Update: New York Knicks finally on the board with a playoff win

May 20th, 2012

Congratulations to the New York Knicks for recording their first postseason win since 2001. The Knicks defeated the Miami Heat 89-87 Sunday. Of course, it wasnt easy. Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire combined for 23-of-42 shooting, 16 rebounds and 61 points. And Dwyane Wade shot an uncharacteristically awful 4-of-11 from the free throw line. Nevertheless, a win is a win as the Knicks attempt to become the first team to ever win a best-of-seven series after trailing 3-0. The series resumes on Wednesday.

The competition has grown by leaps and bounds in its second year, with 27 teams facing off this coming weekend, compared to just 10 last year.

Teams include local businesses, municipal groups and, of course, the Bullhead City Junior Highs Builders Club, after whom...

On readers’ minds: Gambling, milk and old-Florida treat in the raw

    May 15th, 2012

Bolita, you may recall, was for many years Floridas underground, illegal lottery game, which fueled the income of the denizens of the so-called Cracker mob.

    Bolitas sister game up North

Your March 4 column about bolita, Harlan Blackburn and the Trafficantes brought back a lot of memories.

The column also took me back to Pennsylvania, where the illegal gambling was called the numbers. The betting game paid off on the last four numbers of the previous days US Treasury report.

Most Pennsylvania Railroad shop men would buy the Altoona Tribune to get the winning numbers and then discard the paper.

I worked for the Tribune in 1951, and it was struggling because...

    Fun day? Earth Day!

    May 15th, 2012

It was a fun day Saturday as Oak Ridgers celebrated Earth Day 2012.

A special event — the Green Mile Race For Kids — was an overwhelming success with nearly 100 youngsters participating. The event held at the Oak Ridge High School track gave school children as young as six an opportunity to win medals by running races in their own age groups.

An event at AK Bissell Park drew huge crowds to watch the DockDogs competition. The event drew more than 150 dog owners and their canines from all over Tennessee and several other states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois. Excited, cheering crowds watched as the dogs jumped off a dock into a large...
